Thank you for your support. Here are answers to some common questions about contributions to members of the Texas Legislature. We will be happy to answer any other questions you may have regarding campaign contributions. Please e-mail your questions to us.

Who may contribute?

Under Texas law, any person, partnership or political action committee may contribute to legislative campaigns. Corporations are prohibited from contributing. However, limited liability corporations (LLPs) and professional corporations (PCs) may contribute. There are no restrictions based on location of the contributor.

What is the maximum amount that may be contributed?

There are no contribution limits for legislative campaigns in Texas.

When are contributions not allowed?

Contributions cannot be offered or accepted during any regular legislative session, or during the 30 days immediately before or the 20 days immediately after the session. These restrictions do NOT apply to special legislative sessions.

What may contributions be used for?

Contributions may be used for any purpose related to campaigning for public office. They can also be used to reimburse an officeholder for expenses incurred as a result of holding office where such expenses are not reimbursed by the state. (For example, the cost of Texas flags contributed by the officeholder, mileage charges on the officeholder's personal car, etc.) Contributions may also be donated to charity or contributed to another candidate's campaign, if that candidate can legally accept such contributions. Contributions may not be used for the personal benefit of the officeholder or the officeholder's family.

How are contributions reported?

All contributions (and expenditures) are reported to the Texas Ethics Commission. If the total of all contributions from an individual or entity is more than $50 in any reporting period, that individual or entity must be identified by name and address in addition to listing the amount contributed. (The same rule applies to expenditures.) All reports are available to the public at the Texas Ethics Commission web site.

Does a contributor need to disclose his/her address or place of employment?

We must have your full name and address on all contributions. Contributions identified only by an email address cannot be accepted. We must report addresses for all contributors to the Texas Ethics Commission. Addresses are DELETED from reports that appear on the Texas Ethics Commission web site. Addresses are included, however, on printed copies of contribution reports available at the Texas Ethics Commission office in Austin.

State law also requires us to use best efforts to collect and report the principal occupation (or job title) and full name of employer of individuals whose contributions equal or exceed $500 in a reporting period. If you are contributing $500 or more during any six-month period, please include your occupation and employer in the space provided on the contribution screen.
