No Carnaval License Hearing Tomorrow - Owners Agree to Terms
The owners of Carnaval Night Club have agreed not to build a new club on Bellaire and Fondren (nor to allow anyone else to build one there), and to provide specific security measures on their existing site at Beechnut and 59. In consideration of this legally-binding agreement, all parties to the protest of the liquor license for the existing site have withdrawn their protests. In addition, Carnaval has agreed not to seek a renewal of its license when its lease expires in 2008. There will be NO PROTEST HEARING tomorrow, as had been originally scheduled. The agreement was signed by a representative of the Sharpstown Civic Association earlier this week. I joined Council Member Khan, Mayor White, and Senator Ellis in signing the agreement once SCA had announced that the association would withdraw its protest. The successful conclusion of this long battle would not have been possible without the help of numerous individuals. Special thanks to Nirja Aiyer of the Houston city legal department, Matt Caligur, a Sharpstown resident and attorney who represented SCA during the process, the law firm of Beck, Redden and Secrest, who assisted the city, and Mike Laster, for the leadership he brought to the matter in his role as president of SCA. Specifics of the agreement will be discussed, I'm sure, at tonight's SCA general meeting, and also in an upcoming issue of the SCAN (the SCA monthly newsletter). Again, thanks to everyone who participated in bringing this matter to a successful conclusion.
