  • Updates on Some Neighborhood Issues

Some items regarding issues in and around our neighborhoods -

    * The reconstruction of the Fondren/Bellaire intersection continues on schedule, with most of the work (other than some landscaping) expected to be finished in October. When complete, there will be left and right turning lanes and drivers will no longer need to U-turn to turn left at the intersection. This project is funded by property taxes from business growth in the area, which is set aside in a separate fund for Sharpstown area improvements. Other traffic and visual improvements are planned for Bellaire, Fondren and Gessner, pending city approval.

    * The City FAST Team has gotten an injunction against the owner and the landlord of El Michoacano, 5900 S Gessner. Under the injunction, the club is required to hire certified peace officers during late night hours, wand all entering patrons, close most of the parking lot entrances during late nights, and patrol the restrooms for criminal activity. If the club does not meet these conditions and others, there will be a hearing on closing the club on Oct. 30.

    * The protest of the liquor license for Max's on Richmond is moving forward. As of this week the TABC has completed its processing of the renewal application so that a hearing can be held. TABC is awaiting further information from the city of Houston regarding specific legal violations alleged. Citizens who have specific first-hand details of Max's patrons violating the law can still provide those to TABC. No word yet on when a hearing will be held.

    * The city has signed an agreement with the owner of most of the units of La Prominade condos on Bissonnet near Sharpstown High School. These condos, most of which are rental units, have been the site of gang activity and underage drinking, some during the school day. The owner has agreed to add security patrols and fencing, change tennant screening procedures, and generally clean up the property. During the last legislative session, I passed a change to our state's nuisance laws that brings condo complexes like these under the same requirements as apartments.

    * HPD has assigned Chief Brian Lumpkin, who formerly worked in our area, to head an anti-graffiti task force. They have been painting (and re-painting) various graffiti sites in our area. You can report graffiti to them by calling 311. If you don't receive a satisfactory response from them, let me know and I will email Chief Lumpkin directly.

And a reminder - you can report street lights that are out by calling 311, or let us know and we will report them directly to Centerpoint (within our district only, please.) When you make the report, it is very important to have the pole number - a 6-digit number that is on the pole usually on the side facing the street. Without that number, it takes much more time for Centerpoint to determine which light is out since they do their repair work during the day.

As always, let me know if we can be of any help.
