Hearings for Proposed Addition of Alief to HCC Boundaries
Houston Community College (HCC) will be holding two public meetings this coming week about their plan to add the Alief ISD area into the HCC district boundaries. On Tuesday, July 15, at 7:00 pm, there will be a hearing at the HCC Alief campus, 2811 Hayes Road. On Thursday, July 17, at 7:00 pm, there will be a hearing at the HCC Alief Center for Continuing Education, 13803 Bissonnet. No prior arrangements are necessary to attend and to ask questions or to make comments. Copies of the proposed service plan are not yet available, but will be available at the meetings. Community colleges are the gateway to college education for a large and growing number of Texans. Community colleges offer college credit at much lower cost than universities, plus they typically offer a wide range of schedule options so that students can attend while still working fulltime or parttime. Yet despite the advantages and need for community colleges, wide areas of Texas, including Alief, are not part of any community college district. Although HCC has facilities and offers courses within Alief, students from Alief pay out-of-district tuition rates to attend community college courses at these facilities (or any other community college location). Out-of-district rates are substantially higher than in-district rates. If Alief ISD is added to the HCC district boundaries, students from Alief who attend HCC would pay in-district tuition rates. Property owners within Alief ISD do not currently pay property tax to any community college district. If the Alief area is added to the HCC district boundaries, the property tax on a $100,000 home would be about $80 per year (based on current tax rates and exemptions.) Adding an area to a community college district's boundaries requires approval by the voters in that area. As always, please contact us if we can provide any additional information on these hearings.
