  • Polling Locations for March 2 Primary Election

Just a reminder that your polling place for tomorrow's primary elections may not be the same place where you normally vote, since the parties combine various precinct locations to reduce costs. In many cases, the Democratic Party primary is held in a different location from the Republican Party primary for the same precinct. Or, even more confusing, both parties may use the same polling location for different combinations of precincts.

I have the latest polling place information for both parties for all Harris County locations posted on my site at swww.scotthochberg.com. Click "Find Where You Vote" in the menu at the top of the page. All you need to find your polling place on my site is your address - the site automatically figures out what precinct you are in and displays your specific poll location for each party's primary.

Remember that each party also holds precinct conventions at each poll once the polls have closed at 7:00 pm. While there are no national party conventions in non-presidential years, there will be State Democratic and Republican conventions, as well as Senate District level conventions just like two years ago. These conventions will not nominate candidates, but will adopt platforms and resolutions on various issues. If you want to be part of the process at the district or state level, you should attend your precinct convention tomorrow night.

Texas primaries are "open", which means that you can vote in either party's primary regardless of how, or whether, you have voted in the past. There is no such thing as being a "registered Democrat" or "registered Republican" in Texas. However, if you want to participate in a party's precinct convention (or district or state convention), you must have voted in that party's primary, either during early voting or tomorrow at the polls.

If you vote in the Democratic or Republican Party primary, you cannot vote in the other party's runoff election, if there is one, next month. If you do not vote in a primary, you may vote in either runoff.

Of course, no matter how (or whether) you vote in the primary, you can still vote any way you want in the general election in November.
